Grandma’s Kitchen

I am currently posting as a Sophomore in high school at Lincoln Lutheran. I am making it for my “choose your own assignment” for my video editing class. I decided to make this project because I really enjoy shooting cooking videos. I like getting all the different angles and sounds of a person cooking. I wanted to use my grandma’s recipes to add a personal touch to the project and because her food is delicious. I am most proud of the ambient sound in my video. I really focused on capturing all the sounds of the kitchen from a turn of the recipe paper to the crack of an egg.

The most challenging part of this video was finding a good background music and incorporating the oven. I always have to find the perfect music that fits the mood and vibe of my video and it never really feels complete without it. For this project I wasn’t really sure what specific mood I wanted to set and none of the songs I looked at fit the vibe or length of the video. The hardest thing about editing was putting the baked goods in and out of the oven. When I was shooting my thumb got in the shot and I was moving the camera too much as the food was going in. So I could only use like a second of it coming in and out and it looked kind of weird. Through these challenges I learned that there might never be a “perfect” song, sometimes you just gotta make do with what you have. The same thing can be said for the oven scene. I learned that I should focus on shooting and make sure I got all the footage I need, but also need to do the best with what I have.

If I could do the project over again I might want to either add more recipes or focus on just one because two is kind of a strange number. I also originally wanted to interview some people tasting it but that really didn’t pan out so I would try to do that again. I would spend more time on some of the shots because sometimes I got some good angles but I moved the camera too quickly that I couldn’t use them. I would also like to just spend more time planning it beforehand to make sure everything was set up before shooting and editing.

Check it out!
