two people face to face, a breadstick clutched in between their hands

The Breadstick

I am currently a sophomore at Lincoln Lutheran High School completing this project for my video editing class. For this project, I had to incorporate cutting on action with a storyline. I immediately thought of a fight scene. But what would the fight be about? I knew it had to be food if I was going to make my siblings fight over something. A breadstick was the perfect prop.

I’m proudest of my cutting on action and audio. I made the video chock-full of on motion cuts that I thought looked pretty seamless. I did this by filming one action over and over again, usually about four or five different times. I am also really proud of my audio, which is usually not my strong suit. In this video, I was able to cut together multiple different audios to change the mood of the footage. I was also able to incorporate a lot of good ambient sound. The background music fit really well with the mood I wanted to create for the audience and my cuts lined up well with the beats of the song. The hardest part of this project was the filming itself. I didn’t have much time to film, this being finals week so I was really stressed about what to do and when. When I finally had time to film it was pretty late and my siblings were causing trouble. They would laugh at every single thing I told them to do and I couldn’t get them to make the actual punches and kicks very believable. That was another challenging thing. The fake fighting. It was hard to cut between clips without making them too short because I had to cut out the bad footage of my siblings. From this experience, I learned that I should get more footage than I think is needed so I have more to work with later. I also learned that you should continue filming longer than you think you do so you don’t accidentally cut something off.

If I could do this project over again I definitely would’ve thought about it sooner. If I had thought about it sooner I would’ve been able to film sooner and wouldn’t have had to edit all in one day. I also would’ve put more effort into the choreography of the fight scene to make it more believable. I wish I spent more time on the whole project overall. I’m proud of the way it turned out but it definitely could’ve been better in some parts.

Check it out!
